"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". This is why we have W.A.E.S. here in Weston. We give support to people that need help of the most basic kind - food to eat. It is very important for all of us to understand that we serve all kinds of people at W.A.E.S. Some have jobs and families, others are disabled or seniors, and all have pride - so to come for food is very difficult.

People that come to W.A.E.S are given food once a month. As per the Daily Bread Food Bank guidelines a person is given enough food to last for about 2-3 days only. This is supposed to be a stopgap measure to help out in extreme circumstances. Our catchment area includes Wilson, Black Creek, Eglinton and Royal York.

2005 was another busy year for W.A.E.S. The 35 faithful volunteers purchased food, stocked shelves, kept records, and gave out food to over 9,000 people, of whom over 40% are children. The number served in 2005 was up about 4% from 2004.

Local churches, schools, seniors groups, as well as the North York Harvest Food Bank support W.A.E.S. with food donations. We receive financial donations from local churches, businesses and individuals. Direct financial support comes from Central United, St. John the Evangelist, St. John's Anglican, St. Phillips, Westminster United, Weston Presbyterian, West Park Baptist and St. David's Anglican. We also run a fundraiser each year with the Fabulous Invictones donating their singing talents. This event brings in over $1500 each year.

W.A.E.S. also gives out Christmas hampers in December. Food, hats, scarves and mittens are given to about 360 families and singles. This year they received chicken or ham, cheese, fruit, bread, cookies, soup, potatoes and other foodstuff to help them through the Christmas season.
